Older Homes Near the Square
The blocks surrounding the downtown square contain some of Prairie Grove's oldest residential structures. These homes have been reroofed multiple times over their lives, and each layer tells a story about the materials and methods of its era. We sometimes tear off and find three-tab shingles over wood shakes over the original skip-sheathed decking.
On these older structures, the tear-off often reveals decking that needs partial or full replacement. Skip sheathing, spaced boards rather than solid plywood, cannot accept modern shingle nailing patterns. Rafter spacing may be irregular. Flashing around old chimneys, dormers, and plumbing penetrations is often corroded through or improperly lapped by a previous roofer.

Downtown Prairie Grove
The blocks around the town square and extending along the main corridors. This is where Prairie Grove's oldest homes stand, wood-frame houses on stone or pier foundations, many with original architectural details their owners want to preserve. Lot sizes are compact, and staging a roofing job on a tight lot surrounded by mature trees and fences takes planning. We map out material placement and dumpster positioning before the crew arrives so tear-off debris does not end up in a neighbor's yard or against a historic fence line. Several homes near the square have steep-pitch gables and decorative trim that require hand work at the edges rather than production-speed installation.
Bush Street
A residential corridor running through the heart of town with homes ranging from the 1950s through the 1990s. Roof lines here are mostly standard gable and hip configurations on conventional trusses, walkable pitches with straightforward access. These are the homes that tend to be on their second or third set of shingles. The age of the current roof matters more than the age of the house. If your shingles are curling at the edges, losing granules into the gutters, or showing dark streaks from algae growth, the roof is telling you it is near the end of its service life. Heritage Estates
A newer residential development on the outskirts of town. Homes here were built during Prairie Grove's more recent growth and feature the standard production-build roof designs you see across the region, architectural shingles on OSB decking with conventional flashing. These roofs are younger but not immune to storm damage. Hail does not care when the house was built. After a hail event, Heritage Estates homes take the same impacts as the older homes closer to the square. The difference is that newer shingles may show damage less visibly from the ground, making a professional inspection more important. We use close-up documentation to identify hail bruises and fractures that are not obvious at a distance.
Storm Season in Western Washington County
Prairie Grove sits in the western part of Washington County, where spring storm cells crossing from Oklahoma hit first. The terrain is rolling prairie and open farmland, the same landscape that made the ground strategically important during the Civil War battle of December 7, 1862. That openness means roofs here get full exposure to wind-driven hail with little natural deflection.
The Battle of Prairie Grove was the last major Civil War engagement in Northwest Arkansas, with about 2,700 casualties. Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park covers roughly 840 acres and is considered one of America's most intact Civil War battlefields. The United Daughters of the Confederacy purchased nine acres of the original battlefield in 1908; the site was added to the state park system in 1971. Hindman Hall Museum sits within the park.
