Hit Twice: May 2025 and April 2026
On May 18, 2025, a hail event struck Tontitown and surrounding communities in Washington County. Storm reports named Tontitown directly. Hailstones damaged shingles across residential neighborhoods, cracked ridge caps, and left granule loss patterns visible on lighter-colored roofs within days.
Eleven months later, on April 28, 2026, Tontitown was hit again. A second hail event crossed the same area, striking roofs that were already weakened from the May 2025 storm. A shingle that lost granules in the first storm has less impact resistance when the second storm arrives. The cumulative effect of two hail events in just over a year is worse than either storm alone.

Forty Italian Families and a Priest
Tontitown was founded in 1898 by Italian Catholic immigrants led by Father Pietro Bandini. About forty families had originally settled at Sunnyside plantation in Chicot County, in the Mississippi Delta lowlands. Disease, poor sanitation, and contract disputes drove them out. Father Bandini searched for a new location and chose the Ozarks because the climate and rolling terrain resembled the landscape of northern and central Italy.
The town was named for Henri de Tonti, the Italian-born explorer who served as Henri de La Salle's lieutenant and helped found Arkansas Post in 1686. The settlers built St. Joseph Church as their center of community life. Arsonists tried to burn the schoolhouse-church in the early years; a picture of St. Joseph reportedly survived the fire untouched, and the story became part of the town's founding identity.
The families planted grape vineyards on the hillsides and started the Tontitown Grape Festival, which descends from an 1898 Feast of St. Peter picnic. The festival was moved to August in 1913 to coincide with the grape harvest. It remains one of the longest-running community celebrations in Arkansas. The vineyards, the church, the festival, Tontitown has one of the most distinctive origin stories of any city in the state.
Farmhouses, Vineyards and New Subdivisions

These roofs catch full exposure from storms crossing from the southwest, and the uniform construction means damage after a hail event looks the same from one house to the next.
Outbuildings, Barns and Shop Roofs
Tontitown has more outbuildings per property than most cities in Northwest Arkansas. The agricultural roots mean barns, equipment sheds, vineyard processing buildings, and detached workshops are common, especially on the larger lots in Grape Country and along Old Wire Road. These structures take the same hail and wind as the house, but they rarely get inspected after a storm.
A barn or shop roof that leaks ruins whatever is stored underneath. Equipment, vehicles, hay, lumber, none of it benefits from water intrusion. Metal roofing on outbuildings is common in Tontitown, and hail dents in metal panels can compromise the panel seams and fastener seals without punching a visible hole. Rust starts at the dent, the sealant around the fastener cracks, and the leak develops months later.
