Verdigris Roofing and Hail Damage Repair
Most hail surveys name a town. One of Verdigris's names a subdivision: Stone Canyon, May 21, 2024, golf ball size.
Golf Ball Hail in Stone Canyon
On May 21, 2024, the National Weather Service logged 1.75 inch hail at Verdigris, and the survey does something they rarely do. It names the neighborhood: "Golf ball size hail damaged homes and vehicles in Stone Canyon." If you live in Stone Canyon, that sentence is about your street.
Two years later the town took bigger hail. On May 8, 2026, Verdigris logged hail up to 2.00 inches, the largest on its record, with the note "Hail up to two inches in diameter damaged homes and vehicles." That was the same day Collinsville recorded hail drifts two and a half feet deep. Across 2016 to 2026, Verdigris logged 19 hail events of an inch or larger.
Golf ball and two inch hail rarely leave a hole. They crush the granule surface into the shingle, fracture the mat beneath, and dent the soft metal of vents and flashing. The roof keeps working for a while, then the bruised spots crack after a summer or two of sun. A Stone Canyon roof that took both storms and has never been looked at is carrying damage from each.
The order of the two storms matters too. A Verdigris roof that was patched after May 2024 rather than replaced went into May 2026 with new shingles set beside bruised old ones. The bigger hail then landed on a roof that was already part-damaged, and an inspection has to sort out which damage belongs to which storm.
A Town That Incorporated to Stay Independent
Verdigris was a rural community long before Oklahoma was a state. Its post office opened on March 12, 1880, and for a century it got along without being a town at all. It incorporated on June 6, 1980, and the reason is on the record: "primarily to forestall absorption by the City of Claremore."
The name comes from the Verdigris River, which French traders named in the late 1700s, from the French for green-gray. The town had 5,258 people at the 2020 Census, and a 2024 estimate puts it near 5,870, so it is still growing.
Route 66 and the Bird Creek Bridge
Route 66 was aligned through Verdigris in 1926 and re-aligned in 1936, and the historic Bird Creek Bridge on the old highway is one of the town's landmarks. Any older building along a road that old in Verdigris has very likely had its roof replaced more than once, sometimes by laying new material over old.
On a Verdigris building along the old alignment, layered roofs are where problems hide. A second layer of shingles adds weight the framing was not sized for, holds heat against the layer beneath, and covers any rot in the decking from view. If you own an older building along the old alignment, an inspection should establish how many layers are up there before anyone quotes a repair.
Stone Canyon and the River Side
Verdigris sits two miles south of the Verdigris River and about six miles southwest of Claremore, at roughly 610 feet. Its parts of town differ in how a roof ages, and the storm record speaks to some of them directly.
Stone Canyon
The May 2024 survey named Stone Canyon, so this is the one subdivision in town with a dated, documented hail event attached to it. That matters for insurance, because it gives an adjuster a dated federal record that names the place outright. A subdivision also tends to be built over a short span, which puts its roofs on the same clock. When one Stone Canyon roof needs replacing, the ones around it built in the same years are rarely far behind.
The town's growth adds a wrinkle. With Verdigris climbing from 5,258 people in 2020 toward an estimated 5,870 in 2024, newer houses are going up, and a roof built in the last few years has very likely already taken one of the two big hail days. New does not mean untouched here.
Toward the river
The north side of town runs toward the Verdigris River. Houses near a river live with more moisture and usually more tree cover, and both show up on a roof: slopes that dry slowly, moss on the shaded side, and gutters that fill with leaves. On June 17, 2023, a 70 knot storm in Verdigris "blew down trees, and snapped numerous large tree limbs," and on August 13, 2023, a 65 knot storm "uprooted trees." Big trees were the story both times.
The farm ground
Verdigris began as an agricultural community. If your property carries a barn, shop or outbuilding with a roof of its own, the May 2026 hail that damaged homes stood over it too, and it belongs in the same inspection.
